VOLUNTEER WORK WEEKENDS!
Bring your scraper and join the party!

"Many hands make lighter work!" Join the legions of Chalfonte "loyal and hardy" volunteers and help us open up or close the hotel, pre- and post-season respectively. Have a truly unique weekend and paint, scrape, clean, landscape or lend any of your particular skills for a weekend in Cape May! The Work Weekends have created a richly diverse community of volunteers, coming from 27 states across the country. We require only 10 hours of labor (6 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday), a $35.00 non-refundable, non-transferable registration fee per person for the weekend, and in exchange, we'll provide you with a guest room, meals from Friday dinner to Sunday lunch, and an opportunity to gather with people who are dedicated to the preservation of a grand National Historic Landmark. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Spring weekends are filled, however we are pleased to announce the 2008 Fall Work Weekend dates! They are as follows:

Friday, October 17 to Sunday, October 19 • Friday, October 24 to Sunday, October 26

WORK WEEKENDS IN THE NEWS

See the feature and video as seen on New York's News 10 Now, by Valarie D'Elia of "Travel with Val."

The following is excerpted from the Washington Post Style Section, September 26, 2001

Room and Boards: For a Constructive Holiday, Work on a Cape May Classic
By Ellen Perlman, Special to The Washington Post

"The first banging on the doors down the hall got louder as it came closer to my room. I could hear a loud male voice calling out, "Good morning, Sunshine" and "I want to hear those feet hit the floor." Not exactly the genteel wake-up call you'd expect at a gracious Victorian hotel in the heart of Cape May, N.J. Not exactly the type of wake-up call you'd expect anywhere, actually, except perhaps if you're a Marine or a minor at home with your parents. But then, again, it was not an outrageous breach of hotel etiquette, considering that nobody in the rooms was there to be a pampered guest. We had come to the Chalfonte to work. There was painting, cooking, laundry and gardening to be done this weekend, and we were going to do it! "Note: This article generated hundreds of phone calls from the Washington Metro area, and resulted in the registration of 100 volunteers for our final fall Work Weekends, with an additional 250 names to add to our mailing list.
